I’ve covered the basics of pitching in other posts: use comparisons where appropriate, keep it short, don’t be afraid to ask the editor questions.
But as I was thinking back to the pitches I took at the New England conference in March, there were a couple of people who got immediate brownie points. They could’ve said pretty much anything and I would’ve requested their work.
For those who are prepping their own pitches for RWA, here are those magic words:
- “I’ve been a member of the Love Spell book club for years, and I really loved the Immortals series and some of the new authors you’re bringing out, like Elisabeth Naughton and Kathryne Kennedy.”
- “I’ve been reading Leisure since I was a teenager.”
You might see this as sucking up (heck, it probably is a little bit). I see it as someone who already knows the kind of stuff we publish. And having those details counts for a lot.
So go find a book represented by or edited by the person you’re going to pitch. Read it. And use it.

No pitching for me this time at Nationals, but I know there will always be pitches in the future. Thanks for the green light on a slight suck up!
Will miss you next week.

I’m so glad to hear that referencing other romances by the agent or publisher is okay. I find reading those books very helpful in determining who is right to pitch to. Two days and I fly out. Can’t wait!

I have no problem with sucking up.I do so on a regular basis, and I have to say I really love the imortal series. (I hope we are thinking of the same one) kiss kiss. did i mention my favorite color is brown? (not really it’s green, but I am really good at pretending)

LOL, glad what I said stuck with you. Although I wasn’t trying to butter you up. I was serious. I’ve a book club member for the Lovespell line for a while now. Great books!
My daughter, who’s 4, won’t give me “Breath of Fire”. She loves dragons and helps me open the Dorchester package each month. When she saw the dragon on the cover, she took it and “read” it (she was just pretending as she can’t read yet). She calls it her dragon book. I’m still trying to figure out how to get it away from her so I can read it, LOL.
I’m sad that I’m not going to be going to nationals this year. I would have loved to meet up with you again. It was a lot of fun chatting!

Ugh. “I’ve a book club member” = “I’ve BEEN a book club member…” I should really try reading what I write before I post! LOL.

Well, I suppose I must have earned a few points at the New England conference even if I didn’t start out with one of those lines. As we talked, I mentioned that I had read Alissa Johnson, and my book is similar to hers.
And I’ve bought her McAlistair’s Fortune.
